Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek counselling, and yet it's also one of the most misunderstood. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, on edge, or caught in a cycle of worry that you just can't seem to switch off, you're not alone — and you don't have to keep managing it by yourself.

As a BACP accredited counsellor based in Bedford, I work with many individuals who come to me feeling exhausted by anxiety. Some have been struggling for years; others have noticed their anxiety building gradually in response to life changes, work pressure, relationship difficulties, or health concerns. Whatever your experience, counselling offers a space to slow down, make sense of what's happening, and start to find a way through.

What does anxiety actually feel like?

Anxiety shows up differently for everyone. For some people it's a persistent low-level worry that hums away in the background. For others it can feel more acute — racing thoughts, a tight chest, difficulty sleeping, or a sense of dread that's hard to pin down. You might find yourself avoiding situations that feel threatening, or snapping at people you care about because your nervous system is simply worn out.

None of this means something is fundamentally wrong with you. Anxiety is your mind and body's way of responding to perceived threat — it's a deeply human experience. But when it starts to get in the way of living your life, that's when it's worth getting some support.

How can counselling help with anxiety?

In our sessions together, we'd work collaboratively to understand what's driving your anxiety rather than just managing the symptoms on the surface. That might involve exploring the patterns of thinking that keep you stuck, understanding how past experiences are shaping your present responses, or simply having a space where you can speak honestly without fear of judgement.

I use an integrative approach, which means I draw on different therapeutic tools depending on what feels most useful for you. This can include breathwork to help regulate your nervous system, Emotion-Focused Therapy to help you connect with and process difficult feelings, and person-centred work that puts your own insight and strengths at the heart of our sessions.

Taking the first step

I know that reaching out can feel daunting, especially when anxiety is already making everything feel harder. That's why I offer a free 30-minute initial consultation — a no-obligation conversation where you can share a little about what's been going on and get a sense of whether working together feels right for you.

If you're based in Bedford or the surrounding areas of Bedfordshire and would like to find out more, I'd love to hear from you. I offer both face-to-face sessions at Castle Consulting Rooms in Bedford town centre, and remote sessions online.
