How Much Does Counselling Cost in the UK? What to Expect from Fees and Sessions

One of the most common questions people ask before booking their first counselling session is: how much is this going to cost? It's a completely reasonable thing to want to know, and being upfront about fees is something I believe every therapist should be.
The cost of counselling in the UK varies quite a bit depending on the therapist's experience, their location, and whether sessions are in-person or online. In this post I want to give you a clear, honest picture of what you can expect.
What does counselling typically cost in the UK?
Private counselling sessions in the UK typically range from £40 to £120 per hour, with the average sitting around £60–£80 in most towns and cities. In London, fees are often higher, commonly £80–£150 per session. For online counselling, fees are broadly similar, although some therapists charge slightly less as there are fewer overheads involved.
The level of experience and qualifications a counsellor holds will usually be reflected in their fee. A BACP accredited counsellor has met a rigorous set of professional standards and completed a significant number of supervised clinical hours — and their fees will often reflect this.
How many sessions will I need?
This is genuinely difficult to predict before we've met, because it depends entirely on what you're bringing to therapy and what you want to get from it. Some people find that 6–12 sessions gives them what they need. Others choose to work longer-term, particularly if they're exploring deeper patterns or working through complex experiences.
I never commit a client to a set number of sessions upfront. We'll review how things are going together and you'll always be in control of when you feel ready to finish. There's no pressure to continue beyond what feels right for you.
Is online counselling cheaper than in-person?
Not always — and I'd gently caution against choosing a therapist primarily on price. The quality of the therapeutic relationship matters far more than whether sessions are delivered in a consulting room or over video. Online counselling does offer real cost savings in other ways: no travel time, no petrol or bus fare, and the ability to work with a therapist anywhere in the UK.
I offer both in-person counselling from my practice in Bedford town centre and online sessions to clients across the UK. My fees are the same for both, as I believe the quality of support you receive should be consistent however you choose to access it.
Can I get counselling for free on the NHS?
Yes — the NHS does offer talking therapies through the IAPT programme, which you can self-refer to in most areas of England. However, waiting times can be significant — often several months — and the number of sessions is usually limited. For many people, private counselling offers more flexibility, continuity, and the ability to choose a therapist who feels right for them.

If you're based in Bedford or anywhere in the UK and would like to find out more about working with me, I offer a free initial consultation so you can get a sense of how I work before committing to anything. Get in touch via the contact page and we can take it from there.
